The Friends is an All-Volunteer Organization

The Friends of Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (FNNWR) incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in 1999. We are an all-volunteer organization with an eight-member Board of Directors. We make decisions on ways we can support Refuge programs, with input from the Refuge staff.

Our primary source of revenue is the Nature Shop, located at the Refuge Visitor Center. All Nature Shop profits are used for supporting the Refuge. FNNWR has also been successful in securing grants and working with partners to meet our mission supporting the Refuge. We also raise money through membership dues and donations.

For the past two years, FNNWR, together with Black Hills Audubon Society, has offered very popular Birding 101 classes to the community. We also partner with local educational groups to provide a variety of teacher training and field trip opportunities to local students. We are very proud of our support for the Refuge's education program, including helping fund AmeriCorps interns to work as Education Program Coordinators. In 2011, that program provided environmental education about Refuge species and habitat to over 6,300 students.
